The blue folder contained the postnuptial agreement we had signed nine years earlier, when I left my career to manage our home and help him build his company. At his attorney’s suggestion, the document protected me for giving up my salary and personally guaranteeing the business’s first major credit line. If our marriage ended, ordinary marital property would be divided according to the agreement, but I would also receive a defined share of the company’s appreciation during the years I had supported it without compensation.

The next morning, I took the folder to my own attorney. She reviewed the agreement, the company records, our investment accounts, and the spreadsheet my husband had prepared for pushing me out. His confidence disappeared when my attorney notified his counsel that I intended to enforce the agreement and request full financial disclosure. The business he constantly called “mine” had grown dramatically during our marriage, and the signed documents made my contribution much harder to dismiss than he expected.

That evening, he suddenly wanted to reconsider the fifty-fifty arrangement.

“We don’t have to make this hostile,” he said.

I almost smiled.

“I agree. You asked for everything to be divided fairly.”

Then I placed the blue folder between us.

“I’m finally saying yes.”
