Inside was an envelope with Derek’s name written in Frank’s unmistakable block letters. I recognized the handwriting immediately. Walt explained he had found it while cleaning the boat but had refused to open it. My hands shook as I turned the envelope over. On the front, beneath Derek’s name, Frank had written: For the first day you’re ready to take her out without me.

I called Derek from the dock. He arrived forty minutes later looking exhausted and angry until he saw the envelope. Inside was a short letter Frank had apparently written after his heart procedure. He told Derek the boat was never supposed to become an obligation. If keeping it hurt too much, he should sell it. If he ever missed their mornings together, he should remember that the important part had never been the boat. He admitted he had sold the Princecraft for almost nothing because every glance toward the garage made him expect to see Frank loading fishing rods into the truck. Walt listened quietly, then pushed my forty dollars back into my hand. “Saturday costs nothing,” he said.

The following morning, Derek and I took Frank’s boat onto the lake together. Walt even packed the thermos for us. We scattered no ashes and made no grand speeches. We simply fished until noon, drank terrible coffee, and talked about Frank. Derek did not ask Walt to sell the boat back, and I never asked either. Sometimes grief makes us throw away the thing that hurts before we understand what it carries. Frank had hidden one final gift beneath that aluminum seat: permission for his son to let go without believing he had let his father go too.

Walt pulled out a weatherproof plastic pouch wedged beneath the seat.
