Callum read the notice twice before looking at me. A&E Property Holdings was not some distant investment company. It was mine. The letter explained that their month-to-month tenancy was being terminated with the notice required by their agreement and local law, and that the house would be listed for sale afterward. No one was being thrown onto the street that morning, but for the first time, Callum and Brielle would have to arrange their own housing instead of arranging mine.

Brielle stared at me. “Where did you get money to buy this house?” I reached into my cardigan and placed a photocopy of the winning scratch ticket on the table. Callum’s face went completely still. I explained that I had won millions ten months earlier, created protected education trusts for the grandchildren, purchased my own cottage, and arranged my finances so nobody would ever need to decide where I belonged again.

Callum whispered, “You let us think you had nothing.”

“No,” I replied. “You decided I had nothing.”

At 9:15, the taxi arrived. I picked up my suitcase and hugged my grandchildren before leaving.

Brielle had once given me a $3 ticket as a joke.

It became the most expensive joke she ever made—not because I took anything from them, but because it gave me the freedom to stop being useful to people who had forgotten how to value me.
