Before shelled nuts became as common as they are today, families frequently bought walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, and other nuts still inside their hard shells. A nutcracker would break the shell open, and these slim picks were then used to dig the edible pieces out from the narrow cracks and corners.<\/p>\n<p>The long dark ends are the working tips. Their narrow, slightly curved shape made it easier to reach into broken shells without crushing the nut meat. The decorative metal sections acted as handles, and nicer sets were sometimes made with silver-plated or ornate handles so they could be placed on the table alongside other serving utensils.
