He would hold my hands for a few seconds, run his fingers gently across my cheeks, and smile before pouring me a glass of grape juice. I never questioned why he always asked me to walk him from the gate to his chair, even though he had lived in that house for decades. Adults simply told me Grandpa was “getting old.”

Years later, while sorting through family photographs, I asked my mother why Grandpa never seemed to look directly at the camera. She went quiet. Then she told me something nobody had explained when I was little: Grandpa had been almost completely blind by the time I was born. He could see little more than changes in light and vague shadows.

Suddenly, every childhood memory changed. He wasn’t touching my face absentmindedly. That was how he recognized me. He felt the shape of my cheeks, my hairline, and my little hands so he could know exactly which grandchild had walked through the door. And the grape juice wasn’t random either.
