Long before electric irons existed, people needed another way to keep the metal base hot enough to press wrinkles out of clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of plugging it into a wall, the hollow compartment inside the iron was filled with hot charcoal or glowing embers. The heat traveled through the thick metal base, allowing the user to press shirts, dresses, linens, and other fabrics. Many charcoal irons also had decorative latches, vents, and chimney-like pieces on top. The unusual bird-shaped piece seen on this example likely formed part of the lid or ventilation system while also adding a decorative touch.<\/p>\n<p>Using one wasn\u2019t particularly easy. The iron was heavy, the temperature was difficult to control, and charcoal could create smoke, ash, and dangerous carbon monoxide if used in a poorly ventilated room. Clothing could also be scorched if the iron became too hot.<\/p>\n<p>As electricity became widely available, electric irons gradually replaced these cumbersome devices.<\/p>\n<p>Today, surviving charcoal irons are mostly collectibles and decorative antiques.
