I recognized the picture immediately—it had been taken from the memorial card handed out at his funeral. Beside it was a handwritten note: Michael Harris — March 18 — sunflowers. I stared at the woman until she quietly explained that her name was Ruth and that her daughter was buried three rows away.

After losing her daughter, Ruth had started collecting flowers shortly before cemetery workers discarded wilted arrangements. She dried the usable petals and turned them into memorial frames, then anonymously left them for families during holidays. But grief had blurred her judgment. Lately, she had begun taking fresh flowers too, convincing herself she was “saving” them before they died. Nine months earlier, shortly before his accident, my son had repaired Ruth’s broken porch railing without charging her. She had offered him money, but Michael refused. “Buy yourself some flowers instead,” he had joked. After seeing his obituary weeks later, Ruth recognized him and began visiting his grave. The frame was supposed to be left there on his birthday, but she had not finished it in time.

We returned every fresh flower together that afternoon. Ruth promised she would never remove another without permission, and I believed her. Before leaving, she handed me Michael’s frame. The pressed sunflowers inside had come from older bouquets I had brought months earlier, flowers I thought had simply disappeared. I placed the frame beside Michael’s photograph at home. I had gone to the cemetery furious that someone was stealing the last gifts I could give my son. Instead, I discovered that one of those gifts had quietly become evidence of kindness Michael had given someone else while he was still here.

Beneath the cloth was a small glass frame filled with pressed petals arranged around a photograph of my son.
