Friday morning, Dad called before sunrise. “What did you do to the house?” he shouted. I already knew what he meant. During my day off, I had changed every exterior lock, removed the old hidden spare key, reset the alarm and Wi-Fi, and hired a local property manager to inspect the house whenever I was working. The cameras showed twenty relatives standing in the driveway with coolers, luggage, and enough food for a five-day vacation. Their copied key no longer opened anything.

What surprised them most was the envelope attached inside the screened porch. It contained photographs from their previous unauthorized visits: stained furniture, broken patio chairs, missing kitchen equipment, and messages from the family chat admitting they had used the property without telling me. My attorney had helped me send a written notice making it clear that nobody had permission to enter again. Future visits required my written approval, and any forced entry would be documented and reported.

Mom called next. “You embarrassed us in front of everyone.”

“No,” I said. “You invited twenty people to a house you didn’t own.”

Dad insisted family should share.

I looked at the camera feed of everyone loading their bags back into their cars.

“I did share,” I replied. “For years. You just forgot sharing requires the owner to say yes.”
