I did.

The elderly man who had approached my granddaughter was Tomas himself. He had survived the war after his family fled Prague months after mine. They eventually settled in England, while letters sent to our old address were returned. He searched for me repeatedly over the decades, but my new surname and the name “Maggie” made finding me nearly impossible. Tomas walked slowly with a cane, but the moment he smiled, I saw the boy who used to wait outside my door carrying books. We spoke for nearly five hours. Both of us had married, raised families, and eventually lost our spouses. Neither life had been empty simply because we had lost each other. That mattered to us.

Before leaving, Tomas placed the wooden ring in my palm and laughed. “I suppose we’re slightly late.” I laughed too. We never rushed into marriage or pretended eighty years had disappeared. Instead, we became companions, spending Sundays together and introducing our families. On my next birthday, Tomas gave me a simple silver ring shaped like the wooden one. “Not payment for an old promise,” he said. “Just proof that I kept remembering.” Sometimes childhood promises do not come true exactly as imagined. Sometimes surviving long enough to finally finish the conversation is miracle enough.

Inside the package was a tiny wooden ring, unevenly carved and darkened with age.
