Rachel, he said, was working again because I had stopped helping financially. Daycare was expensive. Their budget was tight. I asked why those realities had suddenly become my responsibility again. I would happily spend time with my grandson when invited honestly, not as payment for financial support or childcare. Ethan left angry. Three weeks later, he called again, this time without asking for money. He wanted to know whether Noah could spend Saturday afternoon with me.

That Saturday, Noah and I painted the little wooden boat blue and white. He told me he had missed me. I told him I had missed him too. I never discussed his parents’ finances with him. Over time, Ethan began visiting without requests attached. Rachel took much longer. The relationship never returned to what it had been, but neither did the automatic payments. Closing the Bank of Mom had cost me convenience and temporary peace. What it gave me back was something far more important: the ability to know when my family wanted Barbara, not her bank account.

Ethan stirred his coffee and said, “Mom, this could actually fix everything.
