When we reached the house, the movers were waiting outside the bedroom. Beneath the mattress was a flat metal lockbox secured to the wooden base with old screws. Beside it sat several yellowed envelopes tied with string. Mom pushed past me the moment she saw them and whispered, “Your father was supposed to get rid of that years ago.” That was when I realized she had known exactly what the driver was talking about.

Inside the box were savings bonds, old bank certificates, and property documents connected to a small piece of land my grandparents had owned decades earlier. But the letters explained the real secret. During a difficult period early in their marriage, Dad had quietly created an emergency fund in Mom’s name because he was terrified she would someday be left with nothing. They eventually recovered financially, moved on, and somehow the box remained hidden beneath the mattress for more than thirty years.

Dad sat on the edge of the new bed reading one of his own old letters with tears in his eyes. Mom kept asking why he had never told her the money was still there.

He smiled weakly.

“I forgot the box,” he said. “I never forgot why I made it.”

We had gone there to replace an old mattress.

Instead, we uncovered the backup plan Dad had built for Mom thirty-four years earlier.
