The nurse looked uncomfortable. \u201cHe keeps asking for another blanket,\u201d she admitted. \u201cBut your sister-in-law told us she was the primary family contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I called my husband immediately. He arrived twenty minutes later, furious. We learned his sister had listed herself as the person authorized to make several nonmedical decisions because she had handled their father\u2019s paperwork before admission. She had also told staff that he exaggerated discomfort for attention and that we were not to be contacted unless there was an emergency.
