Celeste tried laughing off the introduction, saying she had only been simplifying my background. I told her there was nothing wrong with saying I once cleaned rooms. That work had fed my son after his father died. What bothered me was that she had used it as a way to make me smaller in front of people she wanted to impress.

I left the club that afternoon with Lottie holding my hand and my old steel watch still on my wrist. Graham apologized several days later, admitting he had spent years allowing Celeste to edit my life because correcting her seemed uncomfortable. I accepted his apology, but I stopped making myself convenient. Celeste never again introduced me with a carefully reduced version of my history. And I never replaced the watch. It reminded me of the years when I cleaned tables, counted every dollar, and built a life nobody at that terrace table had bothered to ask about.

Adrian finished calmly. “…the company that manages this club.” Celeste’s face emptied.
