The letter gave him three options: buy my share at an independently assessed value, agree to sell the house, or negotiate a written arrangement covering every expense going forward.<\/p>\n<p>Derek reacted exactly as I expected. First he accused me of trying to steal Dad\u2019s house. Then he insisted Dad would have wanted us to \u201cwork things out as brothers.\u201d I reminded him Dad had also believed bills should be opened and promises should be kept. Mum called next and asked why I was making everything so formal. I told her because informal had meant I paid while Derek forgot. The outstanding amounts were addressed during settlement, with our lawyers documenting what each of us had paid rather than relying on memory or family arguments.<\/p>\n<p>Eight months after that night at the airport, I stood outside Dad\u2019s house one final time while the new owners collected their keys. Derek arrived late, but he arrived. For once, I did not fix anything he had forgotten. We split what remained after the proper expenses were settled and went our separate ways. I kept Dad\u2019s fishing lures and the old blue mug he used every morning. Losing the house hurt, but not as much as admitting what it had become. My brother had forgotten me at the airport for five hours.
