She cried, argued, and accused Greg of influencing her priorities. Eventually, I showed her the records of everything I had given her over the years. I explained that I was not punishing her for refusing groceries. That conversation had simply forced me to notice a relationship where my money was welcomed more reliably than I was.

I left education accounts for Lily and Owen directly, protected so their parents could not use them for unrelated expenses. Everything else would eventually support the trust bearing Thomas’s name. Natalie and I did not repair our relationship overnight, but months later she began visiting without asking for money. I never restored the old estate plan. My daughter had been right about one thing: I did need to learn to manage on my own. I simply stopped believing that doing so required leaving everything to someone who treated my independence as convenient until it affected her inheritance.

By December, I had done more than change my will.
