It is actually a homemade driveway periscope, built to help drivers see approaching traffic when the road is hidden by a hill, curve, trees, or another obstruction. The original Oregon mystery was discussed online, where people familiar with the location confirmed that the driveway sits near a dangerous visibility problem.

The idea works using the same basic principle as a submarine periscope. Inside the tall enclosure are angled mirrors. A mirror positioned higher up can see over the obstruction and capture a view of the roadway. That image is then reflected downward through the tower to another mirror near the glass section at driver height. Someone leaving the driveway can look into the lower section and check whether a vehicle is approaching before pulling onto the road.

According to people familiar with this particular location, the driveway sits near a dip between hills where approaching vehicles can disappear from normal view. That makes entering the road risky, especially when traffic is traveling quickly. The tall periscope provides an elevated line of sight without requiring cameras, electricity, or complicated electronics.

So the unusual height isn’t decorative at all—it allows the top mirror to see what a driver at ground level cannot.

It’s essentially a giant roadside periscope built to make a blind driveway safer.

That tall wooden structure beside the driveway is not a lookout tower, giant birdhouse, or wildlife feeder.
