It was designed for clearing dense vegetation long before powered trimmers and brush cutters became common. Farmers, forestry workers, and road crews used tools like this to cut through thorny bushes, vines, weeds, and small saplings. The U.S. Forest Service still describes the brush axe as an effective tool for clearing heavy brush and young trees.

The curved steel blade is what makes it look so unusual. Its sharpened inner edge could slice through stems with a sweeping motion, while the hooked end helped catch vegetation and pull cut branches out of the way. Unlike a normal axe, it wasn’t intended for chopping down large trees or splitting logs. Instead, it worked more like a heavy-duty machete mounted on an axe handle.

Versions of these tools were especially common on farms and in rural areas where overgrown fence lines, ditches, and fields had to be cleared by hand. Similar antique examples are often described as billhooks, brush axes, or clearing axes, and many had long wooden handles like the one shown here.

Today, most people would reach for a powered brush cutter or chainsaw instead, so tools like this can look completely unfamiliar.

But decades ago, this heavy hooked blade was one of the simplest and most effective ways to clear an overgrown piece of land by hand.

That unusual long-handled tool is an old brush axe, also called a brush hook or bush hook.
