In reality, they are sewing thimbles, a simple tool that was once found in nearly every household. A thimble is worn over the tip of a finger, usually the middle finger, while hand-sewing. Its main purpose is to protect the skin while helping push a needle through thick or stubborn fabric.<\/p>\n<p>The dimpled or textured surface covering most thimbles is especially important. Those tiny indentations help stop the end of the sewing needle from slipping as pressure is applied. Before electric sewing machines became common, people spent far more time repairing clothing, making garments, quilting, and sewing household fabrics by hand.
