I stepped outside in pajama pants, raised both empty hands where everyone could see them, and called dispatch myself. I identified myself as the homeowner and the involved party, then requested state police and a neighboring agency because I was not going to investigate a crime committed against my own family. Rosalind kept waving her “demolition order” and insisting officers arrest me for threatening her. Corbin, the bulldozer operator, looked from my badge to the destroyed bedroom and quietly shut off the machine.

The outside investigators compared Rosalind’s paperwork with county records. There was no demolition permit, no court order, and no lawful authority allowing the HOA onto my property. The map she carried had been altered to make our south wing appear inside the subdivision. Corbin turned over his messages and payment records, including Rosalind’s instructions to begin before sunrise. Investigators also started reviewing the HOA’s finances after board members reported money missing from reserve accounts.

I stared at the hole where my parents had once slept.
