The starter rolled twice, then the old Ford came alive with a deep, steady rumble that sounded nothing like the knocking Colt had brought home. Somebody near the road laughed. Orville slapped Dwight on the shoulder. Mom sat behind the wheel with both hands resting on it, listening carefully. Then she looked toward Colt through the open window. \u201cDoesn\u2019t sound like junk to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colt stared at the gravel. After a long moment, he admitted he had known exactly what he was doing when he raced the truck. He had wanted the engine for his own project and figured if he damaged it badly enough, Grandma would sell it cheaply. Nobody shouted at him. Then she surprised us by handing him a notebook containing every machine-shop bill and parts receipt. She did not demand the full amount immediately, but told him he could begin repaying the repair costs from his paycheck. \u201cYou broke something that belonged to someone else,\u201d she said. \u201cThat means you help make it right.\u201d Colt agreed.<\/p>\n<p>The following Monday at 7:15, Mom backed the Ford down the driveway herself. Orville, Dwight, and I followed in another pickup. When she reached the grain elevator, she honked twice. Men inside began coming toward the windows before she had even parked. Dad had been gone eleven years, but for a moment that old tradition seemed untouched. Colt eventually repaid every repair bill and even helped Mom wash the truck the following spring. The Ford never became his race-car donor.
