He took the guest room, while I stayed in our bedroom staring at the ceiling. Eventually I closed my eyes and pretended to sleep. A little later, I heard the door open. He walked in quietly to grab his phone charger, then stopped beside the bed. I felt him lean closer, and in a voice barely above a whisper he said, \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I hate when we\u2019re like this. I love you more than I know how to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I almost opened my eyes, but something stopped me. He clearly believed I was asleep. Then he gently pulled the blanket higher over my shoulder and walked out. I lay there completely still, suddenly feeling ridiculous about the argument. He made coffee and quietly placed my favorite mug beside me. Finally, I asked, \u201cDo you remember coming into the bedroom last night?\u201d His face turned red immediately. He tried to pretend he didn\u2019t know what I meant, but I started smiling. I told him I had heard everything. For a few seconds he looked mortified, then we both started laughing.<\/p>\n<p>That morning changed the way we handled arguments. We still disagree, of course, but now we try not to let pride turn small problems into long nights of silence. I realized that love is often easiest to see in the moments nobody expects to be noticed. His whispered apology was never meant to win an argument or earn forgiveness.
