The old household trick is meant to discourage insects from crossing the doorway. Vicks has a powerful smell because it contains camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus oil. Those strong aromatic compounds are unpleasant to some insects, so people have traditionally dabbed products with similar scents around doors, windows, and other entry points in hopes of keeping bugs outside.

There is some science behind the general idea. Research has found that camphor, menthol, eucalyptus-related compounds, and other essential-oil components can repel certain insects under particular conditions. One study involving fire ants, for example, found repellent responses to camphor, menthol, and eucalyptol. However, effectiveness can vary enormously depending on the insect, concentration, surface, and how long the scent remains.

That means Vicks should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement for proper pest control. The product itself is sold as a topical medicine for cough-related vapors and temporary relief of minor muscle and joint aches—not as a registered household insect barrier. The smell may discourage some bugs temporarily, but it can fade, wash away, or simply have little effect on other pests. If ants, cockroaches, or other insects repeatedly enter a home, sealing cracks and removing food or moisture sources will usually be more dependable.

So the neighbor’s unusual routine probably comes from an old-fashioned pest-deterrent trick rather than a mysterious cleaning secret. A small amount around an entryway may produce a strong scent that some insects avoid, but the results are far from guaranteed. It is one of those household habits passed down through generations that has a little scientific logic behind it—even if modern pest-prevention methods are generally more reliable.

Seeing someone smear Vicks VapoRub around a front door may seem strange, but the idea usually has nothing to do with colds.
