Most people assume they are simply decorative, added to make an otherwise plain towel look more expensive. Those bands actually have a name. They are commonly called dobby borders, and unlike the fluffy terry loops covering the rest of the towel, they are made with a flatter, tighter weave.<\/p>\n<p>The terry loops across the main body of a towel are designed to increase surface area and absorb water. The dobby border is different. Its tighter construction can add structure near the ends of the towel and may help it maintain its shape while reducing fraying. Towels can be extremely durable and absorbent without a dobby border, and factors such as cotton quality, fabric weight, stitching, and overall construction matter far more when determining how well a towel performs. Poorly made borders can even shrink differently from the terry fabric, causing puckering after repeated washing.<\/p>\n<p>So those familiar stripes do not contain secret washing instructions or indicate which side of the towel you should use. They are simply part of the towel\u2019s woven construction, combining appearance with some added structure depending on the design. Once you know the term \u201cdobby border,\u201d you will probably start noticing them everywhere\u2014from inexpensive household towels to thick hotel and spa linens.
