The biggest concern is equipment that draws a large amount of electricity or produces heat. When too much current passes through a power strip, the wiring and connections can overheat. In severe cases, the plastic can melt or ignite, creating exactly the kind of damage shown in photos like this one.<\/p>\n<p>Space heaters are one of the clearest examples. Electrical-safety organizations specifically warn that portable heaters should be plugged directly into a wall outlet, never into a power strip or extension cord, because those devices can overheat and start a fire. Electric blankets and heating pads can present similar concerns. A power strip\u2019s electrical rating matters far more than the number of outlets printed across its surface.<\/p>\n<p>There are other warning signs that should never be ignored. If a power strip feels unusually warm, smells like burning plastic, has discoloration, makes crackling noises, or has damaged sockets or wiring, stop using it immediately. Power strips should also never be connected to other power strips in a chain, and extension cords should not be treated as permanent household wiring.
