Thomas Massie of Kentucky says he intends to force a House vote on impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth when lawmakers return to Washington, warning that the effort could be only a preview of the scrutiny Hegseth will face once Democrats take control of Congress in January.<\/p>\n<p>Massie said he plans to reintroduce his articles of impeachment as soon as Monday or Tuesday unless Hegseth resigns. He wrote Thursday that his proposal is a \u201cmuch gentler version\u201d of what Democrats could pursue with control of congressional committees, including hearings and investigations. Multiple Republican sources told CNN they believe enough GOP lawmakers could join Democrats for the impeachment resolution to pass the House even before the new Congress is seated.<\/p>\n<p>Massie originally introduced eight articles against Hegseth in September. They accuse the defense secretary of violating constitutional and statutory limits involving U.S. military operations in Iran, Yemen and Latin America, among other allegations. The earlier effort never received a floor vote after House leaders ended legislative business ahead of the midterm recess. The Associated Press has called Democratic control of both the House and Senate, meaning Democrats will gain committee gavels and broad investigative authority when the new Congress convenes in January. An impeachment approved by the House would still require a two-thirds Senate vote to remove Hegseth from office.<\/p>\n<p>Despite speculation about Hegseth\u2019s future, Trump said Thursday that he has \u201cevery intention\u201d of keeping him as defense secretary. Hegseth has also released a defiant message saying he intends to remain at the Pentagon and defend the administration\u2019s handling of the Iran conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Massie\u2019s challenge therefore creates an immediate test for Republican unity during the lame-duck session. Even if his impeachment effort fails to remove Hegseth, Democratic control beginning in January ensures that Pentagon policy, the Iran war and Hegseth\u2019s management of the military will face substantially greater congressional scrutiny.                                                       <\/div>\r\n                    <\/div>\r\n        <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Rep.
