We created a weekly schedule. I handled Grandma’s hair and grooming every Saturday. Marcus took her to church and medical appointments. Dennis arranged groceries whenever he was home between routes. Two other relatives began visiting during the week so Carolyn could leave the house without worrying. Grandma’s Social Security continued paying reasonable household costs, but Marcus helped keep clearer records so everyone understood where the money went.

The biggest change came from Grandma herself. She told us she did not want to be discussed like a package being transferred between relatives. She wanted to choose her meals, her clothes, her appointments, and who helped with personal care. We listened. Her wrist slowly improved, and by spring she could lift both hands high enough to pin several curls herself again.

Every Saturday afterward, Grandma sat at Carolyn’s kitchen sink with that same white towel around her shoulders. Some weeks she needed a full shampoo. Other weeks she mostly wanted coffee and conversation. Carolyn and I never became perfectly close, but the resentment between us softened. That first afternoon taught all of us something uncomfortable: providing a bed and meals was not the same as making someone feel cared for. Sometimes dignity begins with something as ordinary as warm water, clean hair, and being asked how you want your curls arranged.

Grandma kept looking into the mirror, then quietly said, “I look like myself again.” Carolyn turned away and wiped her eyes with the sleeve of her sweatshirt….

[1

post-1491","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.8 -
