Mama had not disinherited him out of anger. She had left him something—provided he respected the decision she made about the house.

Rick stared at the document for a long time. Then he asked whether Mama had really discussed all of this three years earlier. Estelle opened her file and showed him the notes from their meetings, the competency documentation, and the witnesses who had been present when everything was signed. Mama had known exactly what she was doing. She even explained why: I had given up income, housing, and nine years of my life so she could remain at home.

The realtor Rick had contacted never listed the property. Once he understood that the house belonged to me outright, there was nothing for him to sell. He briefly threatened to contest the estate, but his own lawyer reviewed the documents and advised him that doing so could trigger the very provision Mama had written specifically for that situation.

I stayed on Chestnut Street. I turned Mama’s old room into a sewing room but kept her little radio on the dresser because sometimes I still play the songs from 1958. Rick and I speak occasionally now, although things will never be the same. What I remember most is not his face when he lost the house he expected to sell. It is Mama’s voice three years earlier: There. Now it’s done right. She had known I would never ask for recognition, so she made sure the paperwork gave it to me anyway.

Estelle turned to the last page and read Mama’s final instruction aloud.
