On my screen was the access report from Ledgerly’s private review portal, followed by the timestamped clip showing Colton discussing whether his team could recreate my software. His face drained of color. Sienna stared at him, then at me. “What is Ledgerly?” she asked. I finally answered the question nobody in my family had ever bothered asking properly. “Mine.” I explained that I had built the platform, owned the company behind it, and was already in confidential acquisition discussions.

Colton immediately insisted he had done nothing wrong. I did not argue with him across a dinner table. Earlier that week, my attorney had preserved the access logs, revoked his firm’s credentials, and notified the appropriate people that proprietary material might have been accessed beyond the permitted review. Whether his conduct violated an agreement would be determined through the company’s internal review and the lawyers—not by me making accusations over dessert.

Dad looked at me like I had become a stranger. “Why didn’t you tell us any of this?”

I almost laughed.

“You spent the entire evening telling me not to make important people uncomfortable.”

Then I picked up my phone.

Colton had assumed the quiet woman at the table was invisible.

He had simply never considered that the thing he wanted belonged to her.
