The envelope contained three years of bank records tracing $214,000 from my woodworking business into accounts Tobiah controlled. He had disguised the transfers as vendor payments, then used the money to finance an affair with my sister’s longtime friend and quietly purchase property in another county.

My attorney also included the deed showing that the barn and twelve acres were my separate inheritance, received before the marriage. Tobiah had no automatic claim to either. Worse, he had drafted a fake business agreement suggesting I had made him a co-owner. The signature was mine, but the document had been altered after I signed an unrelated tax form.

The judge immediately froze his accounts and ordered a forensic accounting. Tobiah stopped laughing when she warned that submitting altered evidence could lead to sanctions and a referral to the state bar.

My mother insisted the transfers were payment for all the “support” he had given me. My sister admitted she knew about the affair but said she had stayed silent to protect the family.

I kept the land, the barn, and complete ownership of my business. Tobiah was ordered to repay the stolen funds, cover my legal expenses, and surrender his interest in the hidden property.

Outside court, my mother said I had humiliated everyone.

“No,” I replied. “I only opened the envelope.”

My father left me twelve acres and a workshop.

What he truly left me was the ability to recognize when something had been built on a crooked foundation.
