I submitted my vacation request months in advance and received written approval shortly afterward. By the time my coworker asked me to swap dates with her, I had already paid for flights, reserved a hotel, and arranged everything around that specific week. I politely explained that changing my plans would cost hundreds of dollars, and I assumed the discussion was finished.

The next morning, my boss called me into an unexpected meeting. He explained that my coworker had a “more important reason” for needing the time off and said he had decided to cancel my approved vacation. When I reminded him that everything was already booked, he suggested I should be more flexible and accused me of not supporting the team.

I stayed calm and asked him to confirm the decision in writing. He hesitated but eventually sent an email stating that my previously approved leave was being withdrawn solely to accommodate another employee’s request.

What he didn’t realize was that our company’s policy clearly stated approved vacation could only be canceled for a documented business emergency. I forwarded his email, my original approval, and my nonrefundable booking receipts to human resources.

By the end of the day, my vacation was restored. My boss was instructed to stop pressuring employees into surrendering approved leave, and my coworker was told she would need to choose different dates.

I didn’t celebrate winning the argument. I simply packed my bags and took the vacation I had planned. Sometimes protecting yourself doesn’t require shouting—it only requires keeping the receipts.
