Sloane contacted the title company before Victor’s sale could be recorded. The broker was still on the phone with him when she discovered the second deed: my father had transferred the cabin and surrounding land into an irrevocable trust years before his death. I was the sole beneficiary, and Victor had never possessed any ownership rights.

The document he submitted contained my forged signature and falsely claimed my mother had inherited the property. The buyers immediately withdrew, their deposit was frozen, and the title company referred the paperwork to investigators.

But the cabin was only part of my father’s plan. The trust also controlled timber rights and a conservation agreement worth nearly $2 million. Any attempted unauthorized sale automatically removed my mother as a temporary trustee and triggered a complete financial audit.

That audit revealed Victor had already borrowed money against other assets belonging to the trust. He had used forged documents to cover gambling debts and pay for Brianna’s Hawaii vacation. His broker stopped shouting only when law enforcement arrived to collect the files.

My father’s medals had not been thrown away either. Victor had sold them to a collector, but Sloane traced the transaction and recovered every piece.

Months later, my mother called and said Victor’s actions should not destroy the family.

I answered calmly, “You helped him sell the last thing Dad left me.”

The cabin remained mine, exactly as my father intended.

Victor had believed distance made me powerless.

Instead, it gave him enough confidence to document every crime himself.
