The woman in the gray blazer introduced herself as an investigator from the district attorney’s financial crimes unit. She explained that Richard’s hidden transfers had not all gone to his mistress. Several payments had been routed through false maintenance companies before reaching her account, allowing both of them to conceal income and avoid taxes.

The woman in the veil had already admitted that Richard created the invoices and instructed her to submit them. She claimed she believed the money belonged entirely to him, but messages recovered from her phone showed otherwise. She knew the property company belonged to both of us and repeatedly warned him that I might discover the missing funds.

The insurance carrier suspended the $200,000 payout. After reviewing how the premiums were funded, it returned the money to Richard’s estate instead of paying her. Douglas also filed a civil claim seeking repayment of the business funds she had received.

She later offered to return part of the money if I agreed to keep everything private.

I refused.

The investigation recovered most of what Richard had taken, though no amount could restore the years of trust he had quietly dismantled. I sold the property company, paid every employee fairly, and divided the remaining estate between my daughters.

The woman had entered the funeral believing Richard had left her a secret fortune.

What he actually left her was frozen accounts, legal bills, and evidence carrying both their names.
