The report confirmed that Mateo was unquestionably the twins’ biological father. Brenda had never deceived him. Every accusation I had silently carried for eight years had been built from jealousy, prejudice, and features I did not understand.

But the comparison involving my own DNA revealed something worse. Mateo was not biologically related to me.

At dinner, I placed the envelope beside Brenda’s plate and admitted what I had done. Mateo’s face hardened when he learned I had secretly tested his children. Before I could explain the second result, Julian stood so abruptly that his chair struck the floor.

Brenda finally revealed the secret behind her fear of him. Julian had discovered years earlier that Mateo was born to my husband’s teenage cousin, who died during childbirth. My husband and I raised him as our own, but Julian had used the truth to blackmail Brenda, threatening to destroy Mateo’s life unless she gave him money.

I had known about Mateo’s birth from the beginning. I had promised to love him completely, yet spent years treating Julian—my biological son—as the one who could do no wrong.

Mateo asked why I had doubted his wife but never questioned his brother.

I had no answer.

Julian was reported for blackmail after Brenda produced years of messages and transfers. Mateo left with his family and did not speak to me for months.

The DNA test never exposed Brenda.

It exposed how badly I had failed the son who trusted me most.
