The pounding stopped when security opened the door. A woman about my age rushed inside, crying so hard she could barely speak. The moment she saw Wren, she whispered, “That’s my daughter.” Then she looked at me and froze.

Her name was Celeste.

And she was my identical twin sister.

I had been told Celeste died shortly after birth. In reality, complicated family circumstances had separated us, and she had spent decades believing the same story about me. Years earlier, she had frozen embryos before cancer treatment. One had recently been carried through a gestational surrogate, making Celeste Wren’s biological mother. Because identical twins share essentially the same DNA profile, the hospital’s preliminary comparison had incorrectly made me appear genetically consistent with Wren’s mother until staff reviewed the records more carefully.

Then I looked at Desmond.

He already knew Celeste existed.

Months earlier, while researching my family history for our foster application, he had found her and contacted her privately. Celeste had intended to meet me slowly, but when complications surrounding Wren’s birth created an emergency, Desmond panicked and tried to bring the baby home before telling me the truth.

I was furious.

Not because Wren wasn’t mine.

Because my husband had decided that a secret this enormous was somehow his to manage.

That morning, I met the sister I had been told was dead.

And Desmond learned that hiding the truth “for my protection” could damage a marriage just as badly as any lie.
