Chief Justice Barrett took the stand and explained that I had worked for the state’s highest court for eight years as a senior judicial security and investigations adviser. My work involved confidential threats, sensitive cases, and assignments that could not be discussed publicly. The days I supposedly “disappeared” were documented official travel, not instability.

Then he looked directly at my mother.

“Do you have any idea where your daughter has been employed for the past eight years?”

She could not answer.

My salary records, performance evaluations, security clearance, and employment history were entered into evidence. They showed stable work, excellent reviews, and enough income to support Tyler comfortably. My small apartment and old car were choices, not signs of poverty. I had been saving for Tyler’s education while Marcus spent heavily to create the appearance of greater wealth.

The hearing exposed something worse. Messages between Marcus and my mother showed they had rehearsed her testimony. He promised to help pay her debts if she described me as unreliable and mentally unfit.

Karen finally admitted she had seen the messages but had been frightened to speak.

The judge rejected Marcus’s request for sole custody and referred the attempted manipulation of testimony for further review. I retained primary custody, while his visits became supervised until the investigation concluded.

Outside the courtroom, my mother asked why I had never told her about my career.

“You never asked,” I replied. “You only decided who I was.”

She had testified that I could not keep a job.

In the end, she could not keep her story together.
