The letter was written by Susan six months before her death. She warned that Daniel had pressured her to transfer property into his name, drained a joint account, and used Emily’s tuition as an excuse whenever she questioned missing money.

The county records officer brought copies of documents Daniel had recently filed using my address. He had listed my house as marital property on a loan application, even though I had purchased it years before we met. He had also prepared a deed transferring partial ownership to himself.

My signature had been forged.

My lawyer immediately filed to block any transaction involving the house. We froze the joint account and reviewed every payment Daniel had made since moving in. Most of his supposed household contributions had actually come from money I had transferred for Emily’s expenses.

When Daniel returned, he demanded that I restore the tuition and car access before we discussed “our misunderstanding.” I placed Susan’s letter and the forged deed on the table.

He stopped speaking.

Emily claimed she knew nothing about the paperwork, but text messages showed Daniel had promised her the house would eventually become theirs. She had already told friends she would inherit it.

I filed for divorce that afternoon. Daniel received thirty days to remove his belongings, while the forged documents were turned over for investigation.

He had told me I had no place correcting his daughter.

So I corrected the larger mistake instead.

I removed both of them from the life they had planned to own.
