The first page listed every dollar I had given Melissa during the previous six years.

Rent. Phones. Repairs. School fees. Groceries. Insurance. “Emergencies.”

The total was $86,430.

The calendar showed something else: twelve months of scheduled financial counseling, job-training appointments, and budgeting sessions I had already paid for. Each giant box contained practical household supplies—laundry detergent, paper goods, pantry staples, winter clothes, and school essentials.

Nothing glamorous.

Everything useful.

The final page explained that my monthly transfers, phone payments, and emergency bailouts were ending on January 1. I would still pay directly for the children’s medical needs and education, but I would no longer finance luxury purchases or hand Melissa unrestricted cash.

She looked at me as though I had ruined Christmas.

“You embarrassed me in front of my children,” she whispered.

“No,” I replied. “You gave them a $7,000 wish list and told them my love would pay for it.”

Tyler quietly picked up the expense sheet. For the first time, he saw what his mother had hidden behind the phrase “rich uncle.” Chloe opened one box and found the art supplies she had mentioned months earlier, before the expensive list appeared.

Dad admitted he had known how much Melissa depended on me but had stayed silent because confronting her was difficult.

I handed Melissa the last document: a written boundary agreement.

She could accept the plan or receive nothing further.

That Christmas, I did not buy affection.

I gave my family something far more expensive.

The truth.
