Clause 8 stated that if the company promoted an immediate relative of an executive into my reporting chain without an independent review, every restriction in my non-compete became unenforceable. The clause had been added years earlier after another nepotism dispute. Management had forgotten it existed. I had not.

The CEO called before I reached the elevator. He offered the promotion, a raise, and Darren’s removal if I withdrew my resignation. I declined. For twelve years, I had protected the company’s largest accounts, and three clients had agreements allowing them to follow their designated account lead if I left under qualifying circumstances.

By Monday, all three had contacted me. Within a month, I launched my own consulting firm with their business and several former colleagues who resigned voluntarily. I never stole files, pricing, or confidential information. I did not need to. The clients trusted my judgment because I had earned it personally.

Darren lasted six weeks. He lost two remaining accounts, blamed the staff, and was quietly transferred out. My former boss was removed after the board reviewed the promotion process and the financial damage it caused.

Months later, the CEO asked why I had never warned them about Clause 8.

“I did,” I replied. “I asked you to put the promotion in writing.”
