Garrison stood on my porch covered in snow and asked whether I could clear their driveway before his regional director arrived. The county plow had not reached their road, Emmett refused an emergency call without payment, and Garrison’s own blower would not start. He never asked about my ribs. He only said the dinner could determine his promotion.

I told him I had already spoken to Percy. The north forty beside their house had been leased to Garrison for one dollar a year, giving him space for his garage, turnaround, and part of the driveway. The agreement required basic assistance with my property and respectful access whenever needed. Percy had documented years of missed obligations, so the lease would end in sixty days. Without that land, their circular drive and detached garage entrance crossed my property.

Then I handed Garrison Emmett’s estimate: $6,200 for the winter. Beneath it was my own calculation showing eleven years of free plowing, skating payments, repairs, childcare, and heating oil.

He stared at the total and quietly asked what I wanted.

“Nothing,” I said. “That is the point.”

His boss never made it to dinner. The roads remained closed, and the promotion went to someone else.

By spring, Noelle finally apologized—not because snow needed clearing, but because she understood I was finished confusing usefulness with love.
