I pulled out the document my attorney had finalized that afternoon. It was a formal notice ending Sarah and Michael’s permission to live in my house. They had sixty days to leave. The property was mine, and their names had never appeared on the deed.

Michael laughed until I placed six additional deeds on the table. Every property was fully paid, and the rental income alone exceeded what he earned in a year. Then I showed them the trust amendment. My estate, worth more than $10 million, had originally been divided between Sarah and several charities. After hearing how quickly she allowed her husband to treat me as a servant, I redirected most of her future share into education funds for my grandchildren.

Sarah finally looked up. “Dad, you cannot do this over one conversation.”

“It was not one conversation,” I replied. “It was the first time you believed I had nothing left to offer, so you stopped pretending to respect me.”

On Monday, Michael received notice that the office building housing his company had a new landlord.

Me.

I did not cancel the lease or seek revenge. I simply raised it to the fair market rate they had avoided for years through my generosity.

They had offered me two choices: become useful or leave.

So I gave them the same choice—and kept the house.
