The sheriff’s notice informed my parents that they no longer controlled Grandpa’s house, accounts, or medical decisions. His attorney had canceled the questionable power-of-attorney documents Dad had filed and placed the property inside a protected trust. Any attempt to remove Grandpa or access his money would now require court approval.

Dad began shouting that Grandpa was confused and that I had manipulated him. Grandpa calmly handed him the results of an independent medical evaluation confirming he was fully capable of managing his affairs. Then he opened the red folder.

Inside were copies of every forged check, unauthorized withdrawal, and false document my parents had used over six years. The money they spent on Europe had also come from an account belonging to Grandpa.

Mom turned toward me and demanded that I fix everything.

“I thought my job was only to take care of Grandpa,” I replied.

The investigation eventually forced my parents to repay much of what they had taken. Dad lost his position after his company discovered he had used business records to support several fraudulent transfers. Caleb moved in with an aunt while the legal case continued.

Grandpa remained in his home, with professional help he chose and paid for himself. He also changed his estate plan, leaving most of his property to a veterans’ charity and creating an education trust for me.

They left me behind as unpaid help.

Instead, they left Grandpa alone with the only person willing to listen.
