Instead of welcoming me, two saleswomen looked me over and immediately assumed I could not afford anything in the store. One suggested I browse the clearance section, while the other laughed when I pointed toward a lace gown priced at more than $10,000.

Their comments became crueler as I continued looking. One employee referred to me as a “beggar” just as the salon manager entered the room. The moment he saw me, his expression changed completely. He turned toward the employees and demanded to know why they were speaking to me that way.

What they didn’t know was that I owned the building.
Years earlier, I had purchased the entire commercial property as an investment and rented the largest space to the bridal salon. The manager recognized me because we had recently discussed renewing the company’s lease. I had visited without announcing myself because I genuinely wanted to shop as an ordinary customer.

The manager apologized repeatedly and offered to bring me every gown I wished to try. However, I no longer felt comfortable spending money there. I thanked him, left the salon, and purchased my wedding dress from a smaller boutique where every customer was treated with dignity.

A week later, the manager informed me that both employees had been dismissed. Their mistake was not underestimating my wealth—it was believing anyone deserved less respect because of age, appearance, or background.

At 55, I walked into a luxury bridal salon excited to find a dress for my upcoming wedding.
