The stranger stepping from the curbside car was the new owner’s father, who had come over to help the young couple finish moving in. When Dad demanded to know why strangers were inside “our family’s house,” the new owner walked onto the porch holding the closing documents. “Because we bought it yesterday,” she said. “You need to leave the property, or we’re calling the police.”

Dashiell finally called me. He was furious. “You sold my house?” I almost laughed. I reminded him that his name had never appeared on the deed, mortgage, taxes, insurance, or a single payment. Dad grabbed the phone next and accused me of betraying the family. I told him the house had never been his to assign. Their one-week deadline had simply convinced me that staying there would mean spending the rest of my life defending something I already owned.

The U-Haul never opened. With no lease, ownership interest, or permission from the new owners, Dashiell had no right to move anything onto the property. My family eventually drove away with every box still packed.

That evening, Mom sent one message: “Where is your brother supposed to live now?”

I looked around my quiet new apartment and replied, “Somewhere that belongs to him.”

For once, solving Dashiell’s problems was no longer my responsibility.
