Twenty-one years earlier, after losing my first ticket in a grocery-store parking lot, I had started signing every ticket the moment I bought it. Full legal name, purchase date, and the same small initials beneath it. The winning ticket in Ron’s wallet already carried Janet Elaine Rourke across the back. When Denise asked whether I could describe the handwriting before seeing it, I did. Ron’s shouting suddenly stopped.

I drove to the claims office with my driver’s license, years of old losing tickets I had kept in a kitchen drawer, and the gas-station receipt from that Friday. The lottery officials did not simply hand me $2.7 million that afternoon. They secured the ticket and began their verification process. Ron had apparently told them I had given it to him. I hadn’t. Worse for him, he had already filed for divorce before attempting to claim the prize as his alone.

My attorney nearly laughed when Ron’s lawyer repeated his “half of nothing” remark. Because the ticket had been purchased while we were still married, the winnings became part of the financial issues that had to be addressed in the divorce. His attempt to hide the ticket, however, was documented along with every message and filing. Ron’s plan to disappear with the entire jackpot collapsed before it had even begun.

Months later, the divorce was finalized and the lottery proceeds were divided according to the settlement approved in our case. I did not receive every dollar, but neither did Ron. I kept the house, cleared my debts, helped my sister with medical expenses, and put the rest under professional management. Ron had thought stealing one little piece of paper would erase thirty-six years of marriage. Instead, the handwriting he had ignored for twenty-one years became the one thing he couldn’t explain away.
