The neighbor who called Mom had watched the program with her husband and recognized me immediately. When Mom asked where she had seen my house, the woman laughed in confusion. “On television, of course. Allison’s place was the final feature. It’s incredible.” According to Dad later, Mom sat completely silent after the call ended. They had believed I was living in a modest cabin somewhere outside Boone. They had no idea I had built one of the homes everyone in town was suddenly discussing.

My phone rang eleven times that morning. I finally answered Dad. He congratulated me, then asked why I had never told them about the television program—or how successful Ashford Ridge Developments had become. I reminded him that I had spent years trying to share milestones only to watch something involving Paige become more important. Eventually, I stopped volunteering information nobody seemed interested in hearing.

The strangest part came when Mom admitted Paige had never actually needed help buying groceries. She simply didn’t want to spend Christmas alone after breaking up with her boyfriend, and Mom assumed I would “understand.” I did understand. That was exactly the problem. Everyone had always assumed I would understand being placed second.

My parents visited the house in January. I showed them every room, but I didn’t recreate Christmas or pretend their absence hadn’t hurt. Dad apologized without excuses. Mom struggled more, although she eventually admitted she had taken my independence for granted because Paige demanded attention more loudly. We still have a relationship, but something changed permanently that Christmas. I stopped waiting for my parents to validate the life I had built. Ironically, once I no longer needed their approval, they finally started paying attention.
