Renata opened the folder and slid several pages toward me. Damien had been under investigation for months for moving money through accounts connected to his company, and one of those accounts had been opened using my information. My name appeared on transfers totaling more than $180,000. I felt sick. Julian finally introduced himself properly: he worked with the firm that had discovered the irregularities and had contacted authorities after realizing I might have been used without knowing it. Damien shouted that it was all a misunderstanding, but one of the officers told him to remain seated. The pregnant woman beside him looked even more terrified than I felt.

Then Renata showed me another document. Damien had recently tried to borrow against our condo using paperwork carrying what looked like my signature. I had never signed it. According to the records, the money was supposed to cover debts from a failed investment and help purchase a property with the woman sitting beside him. That was when she finally spoke. Her name was Vanessa, and Damien had told her he was already divorced. He had also told her the condo belonged entirely to him and that he was selling it so they could start a family somewhere else.

The proposal I had just witnessed wasn’t romantic anymore. It was part of a future Damien had financed with lies, forged documents, and money he apparently expected me to help repay. Vanessa stood up slowly, removed the ring he had placed on her finger, and set it beside the champagne. Damien begged her to sit down. Then he looked at me and started saying my name over and over as if three years of marriage could suddenly protect him from what he had done.

The officers escorted him out of the restaurant while everyone watched. I never threw the wine glass. I didn’t need to.

Six months later, the forged financial documents helped clear me of responsibility for the accounts opened in my name, and my divorce attorney made sure Damien’s hidden debts stayed exactly where they belonged. Vanessa and I never became friends, but she sent me one message after giving birth: “I’m sorry. I didn’t know.”

Neither did I.

That anniversary ended my marriage, but it also saved me from the life Damien had been secretly building with my name attached to it.
