The officers explained that Kurt had been stopped several counties away after someone reported his overloaded truck driving erratically. Inside were metal boxes, old coins, jewelry, and documents that appeared to belong to a previous owner of my property. Kurt had apparently discovered old county records suggesting something valuable had once been buried behind my house. The “birthday party” had been nothing more than an excuse to get unrestricted access to my yard.

One officer showed me photographs taken from Kurt’s truck. Among the items was a rusted metal container with the same distinctive soil still packed around it. According to preliminary records, a former homeowner had reported valuables missing decades earlier during an estate dispute. Kurt had somehow found references to the box while researching local properties and became convinced it remained underground. Rather than tell me, he planned to dig it up and disappear before I returned.

The police documented the damage and collected statements from my neighbors. Because I had only given Kurt permission to use the yard for a gathering—not excavate it or remove anything—his actions were being investigated separately from whatever ownership questions surrounded the contents of the box. I contacted my insurance company and an attorney before touching anything else in the yard.

Kurt never returned to the house next door. His landlord later told me he had terminated his lease days before asking for my gate key, which meant the entire thing had been planned. My lawn took months to repair, but insurance eventually covered much of the restoration while the investigation continued. The strangest part was realizing how ordinary Kurt had seemed. For three years, he had waved while collecting his mail and borrowed my ladder twice. Then one Friday, he borrowed my backyard for an imaginary birthday party because he believed a secret beneath my grass was worth destroying everything above it.
