In French, I said, “Before you worry about what Anna lacks, perhaps you should worry about what your manners reveal.” Bernard stopped mid-sentence. Isabelle’s expression froze. I continued calmly, explaining that I had lived in Marseille for seven years, studied at the university there, worked throughout southern France, and later taught French literature for more than two decades. Anna stared at me. Matthieu covered his mouth, clearly trying not to smile. Bernard finally asked why I had allowed them to continue speaking. I told him because I wanted to understand how they behaved when they believed the person being discussed could not defend herself. Isabelle immediately apologized, insisting that her comments had been misunderstood. “No,” I replied. “I understood every word perfectly.”

Then Matthieu spoke. He told his parents that Anna would be his wife whether they approved of her background or not, and that any future grandchildren would learn about both families without being taught that one culture made them superior. Anna reached for my hand beneath the table. For once, I did not minimize what had happened to make everyone comfortable.

The remainder of the weekend was quieter. Bernard apologized the following morning without excuses. Isabelle took longer, but before leaving she admitted that she had judged both Anna and me before really knowing either of us. Months later, at the wedding, Bernard surprised me by giving his toast partly in French and thanking me for reminding him that education means very little without humility. Anna later asked why I had never told her how fluent I was. I smiled and said I had spent too many years forgetting pieces of myself. That dinner was the night I finally started taking them back.
