Delphine opened her battered suitcase and handed me a folder she had carried for seven years. Inside was an agreement supposedly signed by me shortly after she learned she was pregnant. It said I wanted no involvement with her or the babies and offered money for her to leave Michigan permanently. My signature appeared at the bottom.

I had never seen it before.

I immediately postponed the Virginia closing and took the document to my attorney. Delphine also had letters she had mailed me that were later returned through my family’s office, plus messages from Marguerite warning her that contacting me would “only make things worse.” An accredited DNA test later confirmed what both of us already suspected: the twins were my sons.

When I confronted my mother, she finally stopped pretending. “Their mother should’ve known her place,” Marguerite said. She admitted arranging the payment and having the document prepared, but insisted she had been protecting our family name. My attorney preserved everything and began determining who had created the false signature and what legal consequences might follow.

I looked at Delphine and the two boys eating airport sandwiches beside her.

Seven years earlier, I thought she had abandoned me.

She had spent those same seven years believing I had abandoned them.

My family hadn’t protected my future.

They had stolen seven years of it.
