Trevor read the notice twice before looking at me. W&D Property Holdings was terminating their month-to-month tenancy according to the required notice period. The house would then be prepared for sale. Amanda grabbed the papers and demanded to know why some faceless company was suddenly forcing them to move. That was when Trevor reached the handwritten page attached behind the legal notice.

He recognized my handwriting immediately. I explained that W&D stood for Walter and Dorothy, and that I had purchased the property months earlier through the company after learning their landlord wanted to sell. Trevor slowly lowered himself into a chair. “You own this house?” he asked. I nodded. Then I told them about the lottery ticket Amanda had given me for my seventieth birthday. The $5 scratch card they had laughed about had won the $8 million jackpot.

Amanda suddenly began saying the retirement-home discussion had been misunderstood. Trevor asked why I had kept the money secret. I reminded him that their behavior toward me had not changed because they believed I was poor. That made their choices far more useful than anything they might have done after discovering I was wealthy. I also made clear that the grandchildren’s education trusts were protected and would remain untouched.

At ten o’clock, my taxi arrived exactly as planned. I took my suitcase, hugged the grandchildren, and left for Savannah. Trevor and Amanda eventually found another rental before their notice period ended, and the house was later sold. I moved into my yellow cottage near Frances and spent my first Christmas there surrounded by wild roses and quiet. The scratch ticket changed my finances, but the real gift was discovering I no longer had to remain anywhere simply because someone else had already decided where an old woman belonged.
